At the recently held 2010 Chicago Auto show, Kia unveiled a snazzy concept hybrid car “The Kia Ray” that turned a few heads at this prestigious show. Upon a first glance, this car proves to be very eye catching with its EcoDynamic inspired design. This amazing four seat compact sedan has a proposed mileage range of about 746 miles with an impressive fuel rating of 202 mpg. The battery alone can power the car for about 50 miles on a single charge. This truly green car reduces its carbon footprint by utilizing roof top cool glazing solar glass and recycled materials whenever possible

Kia’s popularity has been gaining momentum in the US market since it’s official entry into the market in 1994. Recently Kia opened a plant in Georgia employing 2,500 people and creating an additional 7,500 jobs in the surrounding area. Their best quarter sales were stated in 2009. They continue to diligently and methodically market themselves and are spreading their consumer awareness through providing an affordable vehicle and a solid 10 year 100,000 mile warranty.

Two Cool Concepts I read in Go Green, Live Rich

In my opinion, I think I found my #1 green resource book for this year. David Bach & Hillary Rosner.

Although I am already familiar with many of the subjects they discussed such as driving an energy efficient car, changing my light bulbs and recycling I did find several new concepts that I hadn’t thought of and am looking forward to exploring this year.

Concept #1 - Green Investing

Investing green as a way to build your portfolio. Developing more of a conscience regarding where you invest your money is something I never really thought about. As I invested in my 401K, I innocently let everyone else decide where it was going to be invested. Now that I am older and wiser (haha) I want to change the world and one way to do that is to invest more responsibly, I want to reward and endorse companies that are producing sustainable products and services that are socially and environmentally responsible. How else are we going to make a change? These days change certainly isn’t coming quickly enough through our voting power.

Concept #2 - Take a Volunteer Vacation

In this current economy everyone is talking about taking “staycations.” In my opinion this is not a real vacation. A volunteer vacation is where you save money and have a terrific adventure by providing valuable manpower on a project that is helping the plant and all its inhabitants. Depending upon the type of project you choose, you can be a place with spectacular scenery with time to spare to enjoy it. In most cases by volunteering your food and lodging are included.

Going Green by drinking Organic Tea from Numi

As I was drinking a cup of tea this morning, I didn’t realize that I was “going green” drinking organic tea from Numi. I had

Christmas is a time of buying high end electronics and if you want a great way to make your new computer or TV pay you back might I recommend that you buy a “green power strip” Fight back! Do not knowingly allow 25% of your energy consumption sneak out the door while out equipment is turned off but still plugged into the wall. Remember the good guys win in the end….

Even if you are not purchasing a high end electronic this Christmas Season. The smart strip is a great gift for college students and teachers as everyone is trying to do their part in reducing our carbon footprint. So feel good about your gift giving this year. Set an example, make an impact.

Are you going green using dryer balls?

I woke us this morning thinking about dryer balls. Don’t ask me why I do not know…. Anyway, I was trying to think of one small change I could make today and I was wondering if they were hype or not and this is what I came up with.

1) Using dryer balls will reduce dryer time by approximately 25% so if you have an electric dryer as I do that is significant to me.
2) I’m not crazy about using dryer balls that are made with PVC plastic but I’m investigating “Nellies Dryer Balls” apparently they are not made with PVC plastic and come with a two year warranty.

3) If you are vegetarian, you might not want to use dryer sheets as they main contain “tallow” an animal by product.
4) Obviously dryer sheets and fabric softeners contain chemicals dryer balls soften clothes naturally but you may still experience static cling with man made fabrics
5) Using dryer balls helps reduce lint which should mean less wear and tear on your clothing and help reduce the buildup in your lint trap.

I personally have never used dryer balls but I’m thinking it’s worth a try and I decided to try an experiment.

First, if using dryer balls does reduce dryer time why can’t I throw a couple of tennis balls in my dryer to prove the theory? After all wool is a natural fiber. They may make a little noise but it doesn’t cost me anything.

Second, if my drying time is reduced which is my main objective because I’m lazy about using dryer sheets anyway. I think I’ll invest in Nellies Dryer Balls because I’m hoping they’ll be quieter.

Planet Earth - Why we need to embrace the “Green Movement”

I watched this series on HDTV. It was so breathtaking and awe inspiring. Everyone that was involved in making this movie should be commended. Our planet and all its creatures are a gift and as stewards of our planet we have an obligation to preserve and protect all creatures great and small. Not only because its the responsible action to take but because we’re suppose to leave our earth in better shape than we found it.
I highly recommend this film and I also recommend it for family night. I think it should be added to the school curriculum. This would make a great gift for a teacher.

Green Personality, what kind of lawn “Mower” are you?

Choosing a lawn mower is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let’s break it down a little to make the process easier. What if you could choose your lawn mower based on your personality? After all there are four basic choices, Push mowers, Electric mowers, Cordless mowers and gas mowers. Which mower best fits your personality?

• “Pushy Personality” Push reel mowers are powered by you, after all you need to be in control. They’re quiet, they don’t need cords or recharging, and they don’t pollute. But on large lawns, you might not want the workout you get when using a push reel mower. They also tend to be less effective on grass taller than two inches. A push mower might be a challenging choice if you tend to be impatient, lazy or a procrastinator.

• “Electrifying” Electric mowers do reduce air pollution but they also have some restrictions. They need to be plugged into an outlet to power them, which means you’re constrained by the location of power outlets, the length of your power cord, and any obstacles that may snag the cord. If you have a small yard but don’t want the forced exercise of using a push reel mower, an electric mower may be for you. If you need boundaries in your life and want to help contribute to the air quality by reducing air emissions in your neighborhood this is a good choice.

• “Rechargeable” Cordless mowers are powered by a rechargeable battery. Although you are not tied to a cord, time is of the essence. You don’t have to deal with the hassles of keeping a cord plugged in, but battery life becomes a constraint. Depending on the battery capacity, the size of your yard, and the height of your grass, you may not be able to complete your mowing job on one charge. If you have a small yard and effective time management skills this is an excellent “green” option

• “Gassy” Gas mowers If you can smell the toxic fumes need I say more? Gas mowers offer the most power, which is best if you’ll be mowing tall, dense grass or if your yard is larger than 2,000 square feet. But you will have to keep gas and oil on hand as well as keep the engine serviced. They do serve a purpose but if you live in a residential neighborhood and you have a small amount of grass to mow it is ridiculous to have a gas mower that we know pollutes the environment when we know either of the three above choices are acceptable.
