Why do we need to pay attention to Solyndra in Fremont, California?
Solyndra designs and manufactures photovoltaic systems, utilizing proprietary cylindrical modules and thin film technology predominately, for the commercial rooftop market. Solyndra systems are designed to be able to provide the lowest system installation costs on a per watt basis for the commercial rooftop market. Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Fremont, California, Solyndra operates a state-of-the-art 300,000 square foot highly automated manufacturing complex.
Technology is always changing right before our eyes. Solyndra is a local California, Bay Area solar panel company that boasts of a different edge than most solar companies.
The innovative solar panel company has caught the attention of our Federal Government. Solyndra, received one of the first loans in the amount of 535 million dollars from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This loan guarantee is being used to expand its solar panel manufacturing capacity in California. On May 26, 2009, President Obama visited the Fremont, California plant to observe and personally tour this facility. The investment by the government and the rapid expansion of the Solyndra plant should provide a local shot in the arm by creating new jobs as well as providing a clean technology product that has a positive impact on our environment.
In December 2009 Solyndra filed a statement for an initial public offering of its common stock. The joint book-running managers of the proposed offering will be Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Morgan Stanley & Co. Incorporated.
Solar technology is evolving everyday and hopefully it will become smaller, more efficient and more importantly, cost effective to reach the residential market. Clean energy needs to replace our dependence on coal and oil and as stewards of this planet we need continually explore options to stop abusing our precious resources.
